Education, as it is often practiced today, can feel like throwing food at a child and expecting them to catch it with their mouth— hoping something, anything, gets in. It is rushed, messy, and impersonal.
Learning is different. Learning is a feast—an invitation to a table where a child can choose, taste, explore, and return for more.
This is one reason so many children are capable, yet discouraged. Not because they cannot learn, but because learning has been made rushed, fragmented, and disconnected from how children actually grow.
What Is the Downward Trend?
Standardized systems often make this worse. They were designed to measure efficiency in a system that sorts, compares, and ranks. And what gets lost in the process? The learner.
For children who think differently—who process the world in non-linear, reflective, or sensory-based ways—those systems are not just ineffective; they can be damaging. Many students are told, through repeated low scores and high-pressure environments, that they are not smart, when in reality, their learning needs a different path.
Even for students who do perform well, the emphasis on performance can train them to perform, not to understand. They memorize, cram, recite, and forget. The joy of discovery is replaced by the anxiety of benchmarks. Creativity is crowded out by compliance.
Assessment does not merely ask, “Did the learner pass?” It asks, “What does the learner understand, how can they use it, will they remember it, and can they teach it to others?” That’s mastery.
The solution is not more standardization, but more personalization. We can move away from mass instruction toward mentor-guided, curiosity-driven learning. The buffet taught me something about systems.
I grew up in Las Vegas, where buffets were everywhere. They were not popular because people wanted more food. They were popular because they solved a real problem: you could bring all your friends, and everyone could find something they genuinely liked.
No one had to justify preferences. The environment was prepared, and choice was respected.
That experience shaped how I think about learning systems. When structure is thoughtful and options are intentional, people engage more fully—because what is offered actually fits.
That is part of what BRIM is trying to do. Not create chaos. Not create endless options with no direction. But prepare the table well enough that more children can access the tools that best fit their needs.
