Learning Should Be Open to Every Learner
At BRIM Academy, we believe differences among learners are not obstacles to education. They are part of being human. Our goal is to create learning experiences that allow students to read, listen, speak, observe, explore, create, move, reflect, and participate in meaningful ways.
Our Commitment
BRIM Academy is continually working to improve the accessibility and usability of our website, digital curriculum, and learning resources.
Our accessibility efforts are guided by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, with a goal of meeting Level AA standards wherever reasonably possible. We do not claim that every BRIM page or resource has completed a formal accessibility audit, and we view accessibility as an ongoing process of improvement.
What We Are Working Toward
As BRIM grows, we are building accessibility into the way we design websites, lessons, courses, documents, media, and learning activities.
Clear text, logical organization, comfortable spacing, and layouts designed for ease of use.
Meaningful alternative text or descriptions for important instructional images whenever possible.
Navigation and learning activities that can be used without relying solely on a mouse whenever possible.
Colors and design choices intended to keep text and important information easy to distinguish.
Captions, transcripts, written alternatives, or supporting text for important media when appropriate.
Materials designed, when possible, to work with enlargement and commonly used assistive technologies.
Accessibility Is More Than a Checklist
Technical accessibility matters, but so does instructional accessibility.
A learner may understand an idea best by hearing it, seeing it, discussing it, handling something real, moving, drawing, building, reading, or explaining it aloud.
BRIM seeks to provide more than one doorway into learning whenever the subject and activity allow it.
More Than One Way to Learn
BRIM Academy does not expect every learner to encounter every idea in exactly the same way. Whenever possible, our courses combine different forms of participation so students can engage actively with what they are learning.
Technology should expand a learner’s opportunities rather than determine how that learner must learn. At BRIM, the screen is a tool, not the classroom. The world is the classroom.
Third-Party Tools and Services
BRIM Academy uses outside platforms and services to deliver portions of our learning experience. Accessibility within those services may vary, and some features may be outside BRIM’s direct control.
When we become aware of a barrier in a third-party tool, we will make reasonable efforts to identify an alternative way for the learner to access the essential information or participate in the activity.
If Something Isn’t Working, Please Tell Us
Accessibility is an ongoing process, and we know we will not always get everything right the first time. If you or your learner encounters a BRIM page, course, document, video, activity, or other resource that is difficult to access, we want to know.
